The Seahorse Trust is a UK-based charity dedicated to marine conservation, using seahorses as flagship species to protect coastal ecosystems. Established in 1999, it collaborates globally through the Seahorse Alliance to conduct research, education, and advocacy efforts aimed at preserving seahorses and their habitats.

🌊 Conservation Efforts

  • British Seahorse Survey: Launched in 1994, this long-running citizen science project collects seahorse sightings across the UK, contributing to the National Seahorse Database. This data has led to legal protections for British seahorses under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981).
  • Captive Breeding & Nutrition Research: The Trust has successfully bred 22 seahorse species, including British varieties, and developed nutritional techniques to improve survival rates. This work supports conservation through cultivation and reduces the need for wild capture.
  • Global Projects: The Trust supports initiatives in Malta, Bermuda, Peru, and Ireland, focusing on habitat restoration, sustainable trade, and public education.
